You often see the term sustainability, but what does that actually mean?
The term sustainability
In short, sustainable means "intended to last." It is a term that often refers to products or items that are made in an environmentally friendly manner and therefore burden the environment as little as possible. This applies to nature, people and animals.
It is a development that considers the needs of the current generation without harming those of future generations.
The core of sustainability
Sustainability therefore relates to the three P's:
- People
- Planet (environment)
- Profit
The point here is that one does not come at the expense of the other. What has often emerged in the past (and is still happening in the present) is that a lot of profit is made at the expense of people's health (working in harsh conditions) or at the expense of the earth (for example felling of forests).
But why has sustainability (become) so important?
As humans, we are very influenced by advertisements and want more and more. Often things that we don't need. Commercial products have accelerated production. We want more and more and the demand must be able to meet that, which is often accompanied by fast production. Large factories or sweat shops are used for this.
But why is that bad?
The quality of these products is often poor, which means that people cannot use a product for a long time and therefore have to purchase the product again after a short time. This means even more CO2 emissions and the people in the sweatshops have to work harder and harder. It is also mass production and you don't actually have unique items, let's face it.
What can you do yourself to buy more sustainably?
Instead of QUANTITY, go for QUALITY. These products are often produced in a 'fairer' way and are more unique. These products also often come from people who put their heart and soul into it, the products do not contain harmful substances (such as lead) and therefore last longer.
